It should be up to the video application to stop the screen saver. Mplayer
does this at startup with message "Disabling DPMS", and restores it when
shutting down with message "Successfully enabled DPMS".

DPMS is one of the facilities that X should enabled to function.

Check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for message like :

Xorg.0.log:(II) Loading extension DPMS
Xorg.0.log:(II) RADEON(0): DPMS capabilities: StandBy Suspend Off; RGB/Color
Display
Xorg.0.log:(**) RADEON(0): DPMS enabled

Cheers,

Ernest.
