I've a single core amd54 3500+, it switches automatically the frequency and the voltage: i.e. 1.15V 1GHz when idle so the processor temperature is about 30C int hese conditions (cool) and the fan speed can be adjusted for the system to be as quiet as possible.

For the fan, you can use thenam controlled fans or the fancontrol program which is part of the lm-sensors package
