ext2 issues

Hi List,
I've experienced some strange problems with ext2.
I'v two partitions in my system. One / with ext3 and one /var with ext3. 
If I boot up the system I often get the message that /var was not cleanly
unmounted and a check was forced.
The point is: I _always_ shut down my Notebook normally via KDE or console.
Is this a known issue?
Any sollutions/Ideas?
