Looks like script changes working directory to:
/tmp/mkinitrd.XXXXXX/initrd and then executes

"mkcramfs /tmp/mkinitrd.XXXXXX/initrd outfile"

so outfile goes to  /tmp/mkinitrd.XXXXXX/initrd

I think that author forgot to add "cd $ORIGDIR" somewhere.
