Hi, I have same problem after switching to amd64.GDM( and xdm, kdm) dont find frist free virtual console, and run on console 7. And at same time on console 7 run getty(i have 9 consoles).
Solution for me is to edit gdm configuration file an set it to run on first free VC.
in file: /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf FirstVT=10 Jamil Djadala
