IIRC, the problem with GRUB's XFS support is that it doesn't handle
fragmented files properly.  If the kernel image has any holes in it,
GRUB won't load it.  (I hit this problem with yaboot which virtually
uses the same XFS code as GRUB.)

You can check for holes in files with xfs_bmap and defragment them
with xfs_fsr.
