nVidia glx gone

Without touching the nVidia packages or the kernel, I've lost glx:

   (II) LoadModule: "glx"

Here I get "Fatal server error".  If I leave glx out of the list
of modules in the XFree86 configuration file, I get working
x-windows without glx:

   (II) Loading extension NV-GLX
   (II) NVIDIA(0): GLX visuals set up

   (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load GLX

The behavior is identical in 2.6.9-rc6 and 2.6.12-rc2, with
nvidia 1.0.6629 and 1.0.7174. I imagine the problem was
caused by some other package -- I made the changes
below after the last known use of x-windows (log kept
by wajig).

I can live without GLX but if anyone ran into this, maybe
we can figure out what happened.
