Could you report the BIOS setting for "Using Plug-and-Play OS?"?
The Plug-and-Play should be set to NO for Linux so the BIOS
configures the disks first.
The "PnP OS" is set to "No". Also, the on-board Promise SATA
controller is disabled. But the problem doesn't seem to arise (at
least directly) from the identification of the disk; the first step in
the Debian base system installation works OK, no problem in
partitionin the disks etc. It's only after the first boot that it
fails, freezes.
Of the netinstall images available under
http://debian-amd64.alioth.debian.org/install-images/ now, 2005-01-24
is broken (claims it can't find any kernel modules on the CD) and the
2004-12-14 does work for the disks, but doesn't work for the NIC...
Have a nice day,
