BTW if you haven't read the current proposal for multiarch it is
available at http://people.debian.org/~taggart/multiarch/

It appears Debian will be moving to /usr/$(gcc -dumpmachine)/{lib,include}
for the dirs with the old dirs, /usr/lib /usr/lib64 /usr/include, going
away eventually.
