WARNING: I am not an expert.

I have MSI K8N Neo motherboard here. Booting with the CD created from the
sid-amd64-netinst.iso:

When the window 'Network autoconfiguration failed' appears
Press Alt F2 to enter another console
Enter the command 'lsmod'
You'll see a line for ieee1394 that has eth1394 on it
Enter the command 'modprobe -r eth1394'
Enter the command 'modprobe forcedeth'
Press Alt F1 to get back to the installation console
Select <Continue>
Select <Retry network autoconfiguration>
You should see a message indicating success.
When the machine reboots it will fail to find the ethernet port again.
Press Alt F1 and log in as root.
Edit /etc/modules put 'forcedeth' at top of the list and save the file.
Press <Ctl><Alt><Del>
The machine should find the network now.

Hope this helps
