trying to get radeon dri working

i have a pci 7500 (and an agp 9200, but it's not really supported). i've
tried build the kernel radeon driver as a module and built into the kernel.
dmesg looks good, but when i startx, i get this:

(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4"

Skipping "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.a:debug_xform.o": No
symbols found
(EE) Failed to load module "xie" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "pex5" (module does not exist, 0)
Skipping "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libspeedo.a:spencode.o": No symbols
found
modprobe: QM_MODULES: Function not implemented

modprobe: QM_MODULES: Function not implemented

modprobe: Can't locate module radeon
[drm] failed to load kernel module "radeon"
(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] DRIScreenInit failed. Disabling DRI.

any hints? i'm running testing, btw. i've tried building the "dri-trunk*"
stuff from daenzer, but the unpack script doesn't even work.

why doesn't debian just work, straight out of the box? it's not like radeon
is an obscure unsupported family.

btw, i using a 64bit kernel. it didn't work under 32bits either.
