I haven't had a chance to try that yet, but 5 fps indeed sounds like it
is software rendered. You should probably look in your /var/log/XFree86.0.log
to see if the server had problems enabling drm and check that
your binaries are using the xlib{,64}mesagl-dri libraries.

My standard test case is running glxgears full screen, which varies between
10fps and 500fps without or with dri.
