Just thought I should confirm that reducing the display resolution so I
could increase the depth to 24 bits made the vertical stripes go away.
Probably shouldn't have been a surprise that the latest and greatest
"eye candy" window managers would require a minimum depth of 24 bits to
work properly. That being said, 16-bit depth used to work just fine
with KDE4, so I confess to being annoyed at having to give up desktop
real estate just to get things working again. Bug? Feature? I don't
suppose it matters all that much except to those of us trying to keep
our older vintage hardware running.
The above request for video card recommendations still stands. Thanks
