I lied :-).  I simply logged-in and let apt-watch do its thing with an
updated sources.list file.  More than 800 MB of downloaded updates
later...

Debian has been criticized for its "we'll release it when it's ready
and not before" stance.  The payoff for the long delay between Sarge
and Etch was watching the aforementioned 800+ MB of updates install
flawlessly, leaving the system in a usable state when the smoke cleared.
Minimal interaction with the update process was required due to a few
correctly-identified local modifications to package configurations, as
well as console keymaps.  All I can say is, "wow!"  Anyone who takes
the smoothness of the upgrade process I experienced for granted should
be taken out and flogged.
