It boots without any of the SCSI problems and starts up the md device and 
LVM ok, just has problems because as you pointed out, 2.6.15 has no devfs.

2.6.8-2-generic from sarge also boots ok with SCSI, however it prints 
devfs_mk_dir: invalid argument.<4>devfs_mk_dev: could not append to parent for /disc
for a while before the initrd mounts / and the real boot continues.
