Hello,

This was indeed a problem of old version of isdnctrl installed.
It was installed in /sbin/isdnctrl even though the script
/etc/init.d/isdnutils was referring to /usr/sbin/isdnctrl and
'which isdnctrl' was /usr/sbin/isdnctrl. Either ipppd or isdnlog are
internally referring to /sbin/isdnctrl (or so it seems since isdnctrl
is not called explisitly from /etc/init.d/isdnutils). I have not looked
further into it since after removing /sbin/isdnctrl everything works
flawlessly.
