oh that was at exactly the magic key I needed to know.  Extrapolating a bit out 
on thin ice, I would say that any time you need to load modules at boot time, 
create a file in /etc/modutils/ with all of the information necessary and then 
run update-modules.  I would further hazard a guess that it's not appropriate to 
modify existing files but instead create new ones so that when you update the 
system your changes don't get lost.  Correct?
