Which Number 9 card?  Many were based on S3 chipsets (either Trio64 or
ViRGE-based).  If you can, provide the output of 'lspci -v'.  That would
help in trying to figure out what type of card it is.  If it is S3-based,
the SVGA driver may not be the Xserver that you need.

Note that most of the supported cards in the SVGA server are Matrox cards.

Here's why I suspect an S3 chipset :-)  I've got a Trio64, FYI, and have
been down this road before :-)  Before trying just the S3 server, though,
let's have a look at that lspci and find out just which (S3 or S3V) is
better for your card).
