need help badly with problem: can't access system!!

I have a Debian/Potato Alpha system (yes I know not stable yet) that
has been running fine until just recently. For some reason unknown at
this point (perhaps related to installing ssh-nonfree ?), I can no
longer access the system. It appears that my /etc/passwd has been
wiped?

So, I boot the system using my rescue diskettes from Debian 2.1 (none
availe for potato yet). I get into the shell and the mount command
will not work. It tells me that I have too many fs, bad superblock,
or wrong fs type. fdisk checks out the partitions OK. e2fsck also
checks OK. The system also boots fine and shows a normal boot-up
sequence. I can ping to it, but cannot login.

Any help on how to fix this one? My only guess is that the mount
command is not compatible between the slink -> potato or the kernel
being 2.2.14 now versus 2.0.xx on the rescue disks?

Need help to fix this one...
