BSD formatting (again)

Have been trying to install debian on an 8.7G SCSI drive on a ds-10. Set
up the partition table, reboot, proceed with formatting and base install.
Then reboot to install packages, but the partition table has vanished. If
I only set up the partition table and format, then reboot, the result is
the same. Not sure why this is being so difficult (is there anything buggy
with the reboot process?), but I must be missing something simple. Any
advice appreciated.
