TGA Framebuffer issues

Hi,

Having spent lots of money on the Alpha box, I would now like to save money
by using an old WYSE 17" mono fixed-frequency monitor to work. It works fine 
with XFree86 (after playing with the video timings a bit) and SRM will also
come up in 1280x1024 (after playing with DIP switches on the back of the 
card) but it appears that the current TGA framebuffer driver is hardcoded to
use 640x480. 

Could anyone who understands this code (Jay Estabrook, maybe?) help me hack
it to work at 1280x1024? I have no problems playing with the code but know
nothing about TGA cards (coming from x86 land)...
