This type of messages lead me to suspect incorrect SCSI cabling,
either problems with termination or problems with the quality
of the cable itself (impedance, for example). I had no problems
whatsoever connecting and using an external Yamaha 4260 cd r/w
unit to my XLT.

I don't think that it is a kernel bug. If it is not possible for the
hardware to talk to the cpu, it can hardly be blamed on the OS for
not fixing this.
