I have the same problem on my SX164 (reading the root-disk forever).

Unfortunately this did not solve the problem for me. Well, I didn't try to
remove the D-Link DFE-500 TX network card, which was recognized by both,
the debian and the redhat kernel.

p.s.: I used rescue=sx164 and root disks from
	http://lhpca.univ-lyon1.fr/axp/debian.html
and then replaced the file "linux" on the rescue disk with the
      sx164 kernel in ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/redhat-5.1/alpha/kernels/
