Hmmm, they didn't work too well, so I got them from getekeeper instead.  In
fact  I managed to make my own brew of resc1440.bin [thanks  Dave].

Now the problem I'm facing is a very dodgy console when using vi and that
dselect [dpkg] seems to have problems when unpacking packages [operation not
permitted errors when chown'ing symlinks IIRC]
