Problems compiling a kernel

Hi,

I tried to compile a kernel from the source packages with the patch
package. The problem is that installing the source package just puts a
.tar.gz in /usr/src, not unpacking it. I unpacked it and applied the
patches from the patch package manually, that seemed to work. The only 
problem is that nfs doesn't work anymode because the module says it
can't resolve the symbol __kernel_thread; any ideas?
