I think you don't need to upgrade to sarge to be able to install
"testing" pkgs. Upgrading can sometimes raise other troubles. It is
possible to "mix" different versions, etc.
There is notes about it in apt-howto (sections 3.8, 3.9, 3.10)
available from www.debian.org/doc/manuals/.
