In order to use TCP/IP in System 7, you need the MacTCP control panel
and the libraries that come with it. However, they didn't include it
by default until later releases. I know 7.5.5 had it, and I know 7.1
didn't have it, but I'm not sure about anything in between. What do
you mean by seeing the barricade? Without knowing more about what
this machine can and cannot do currently, it's hard to help.

I really doubt buying anything will help, since you should have
everything you need. I suspect it is a configuration problem. The
main things you need are the Network and MacTCP control panels, and
to have things setup properly in them. Set both the Network and MacTCP
control panels to use Ethernet, and then in MacTCP, you'll need to
configure the IP settings, which would depend on the way the rest
of your network is setup.

Linux isn't likely to need anything else in terms of hardware, although
the driver for the onboard ethernet in the AV macs wasn't entirely
reliable last I knew.
