Re: V3 Amiga install problem - update

Hi there, Christian

OK - I've managed to finally install the latest base system, and thought I'd
better let you know how, and where the problems were.

Firstly, the 3.0 archives get stuck looking for some files during installation
of the base system (packages.gz).
Using the method below, installation of the kernel and drivers from the 2.2
distribution resulted in being unable to configure drivers (meaning that ppp
couldn't be added to the kernal and preventing an online connection)

So here's what I did - it got a bit convoluted, but it's worked.

Put the R2.2 CD in the drive, and CD to the install/amiga drawer on the CDRom
(it doesn't work if you don't CD to it - dbootstrap doesn't find the CD - don't
know why).

Run amiboot from the 3.0 archive (the 2.2 doesn't work) using the V3 kernel and
the v2.2 root.bin. This should get you tp dbootstrap. Now the convoluted bit:-

Install the kernel and device drivers from the 3.0 distribution.

Go to configure the device drivers, though no options will actually be presented
at this point.

Configure the host name, then install the base system from the 2.2 archive.
Configure the base system, and then go back to configure the device drivers.

This should now work, and devices (specifically ppp in my case) can be added to
the kernel.

Nowyou can reboot, and should be able to configure your ppp connection and then
get the updates from the net.

The 2.2 kernel doesn't boot here, using root.bin from the 3.0 distribution
prevents installing the base system, and installing the kernel/device drivers
from the 2.2 CD doesn't allow the devices to be configured.

So essentially, I've had to install a hybrid system, and thn update it all
online - but it's working now.

Now I have a question.

My ISP kicks me off after 2 hours online, forcing a reconnection. I know that
dselect can recover from this, but since downloads are likely to be very large
using a dial up connection, I won't get them in one go. Is there anyway to
automate the reconnect/resume/fix process so that I can, for example, leave the
system overnight unattended to get everything (bear in mind I'm on the base
system at the moment - no X windows, gui or fancy utils, yet)

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Steve
