Dick, I, too, have Debian Potato running on a Centris 650. My modem
(Practical Peripherals MC288MT) is accessed via /dev/ttyS0 and works OK
despite a similar "UART is a undefined" message (I downloaded the potato
distribution using apt-get, ftp and the modem.) I'm sorry not to be able
to tell you what the problem is, but I don't think that the "undefined"
message is the answer.

One simple test of your modem would be to type

echo atz > /dev/ttyS0

(making sure that you're watching the modem lights as you press the
return key!) If the modem lights flash, then your connection to the
modem is good and the problem is at another level. If there's no
response, try the same command using ttyS1.

HTH,

Jonathan
