Hello again to all. It seems that my login problem (being dumped back to the X login screen) resulted from problems starting the default wm, afterstep classic (asclassic). I <ctrl>-<alt>-<f2>'ed out, swapped it for twm in /etc/X11/window-managers, and all is well now. Thanks again to those who have helped me with these various tribulations.
