Thanks anyway Michael, and it doesn't make any sense to me either. 
When I type "ls" for that directory (/etc/X11/) I get a list that
includes XF86Config but X still won't recognise it ?!

Don't put yourself out for this, it's only a hobby for me and I don't
know enough about it to get in below my knees.  I will be trying the
various suggestions I've got through this mailing list and will let
everyone know how it turns out.  Thanks to Justin and Lee and Christian
as well.  At least there's something else for me to try.
