Just a guess/speculation - I think the greatest colour depth you can get
on an A1200 (without a video card) is 256 colours/8bit and the only
'standard' grey palette I'm aware of is the 256 colour/8bit scale.  As
the system will have already allocated some/most/all of the existing
palette there won't be enough colours left for the grey scale.
