You won't get imprisoned, you just get the cheese confiscated. In fact
tyou almost certainly get to smuggle it in successfully at least 90%
of the time. If MJ hadn't pointed out the tiresome rules you wouldn't even
have worried that someone might notice whilst doing so.
So I recommend that you bring your highly infectious cheeses to
debconf anyway, just because they can't really stop you, and some
people would appreciate it. (I don't really like cheese myself, except
the plastic sort made famous by la Vache Qui Rit). In fact, I might bring
some of that as I'm in France next week :-)
