Duh.

That was outdated or misperceived info, obviously.
Both, my current Samsung DVD drive and the LG BD drive
do offer format 0x01 with DVD-RAM.
Mounted Media: 12h, DVD-RAM
...
READ FORMAT CAPACITIES:
formatted: 2236704*2048=4580769792
00h(800): 2236704*2048=4580769792
00h(800): 2295072*2048=4700307456
01h(800): 2226976*2048=4560846848
01h(800): 2217248*2048=4540923904
Last time i checked DVD-RAM formatting was with a
Philips DVD drive that has been replaced by the BD
burner now.
(I should try to revive my old NEC burner and check
whether i need new glasses or a new brain ...
probably the latter. Shrug.)

Some observation with the -ssa=none BD-RE media
(so it is good for something):
It still makes a speed difference whether i
use WRITE10 or WRITE12 with streaming bit.
With WRITE10, the drive buffer is filled with
varying amounts under 40 percent:
xorriso : UPDATE : Writing: 1490432s 69.8% fifo 100% buf 34% 2.1xB
xorriso : UPDATE : Writing: 1494784s 70.0% fifo 100% buf 23% 2.1xB
xorriso : UPDATE : Writing: 1499627s 70.2% fifo 99% buf 9% 2.1xB
xorriso : UPDATE : Writing: 1503768s 70.4% fifo 100% buf 18% 2.0xB
xorriso : UPDATE : Writing: 1536208s 72.0% fifo 100% buf 23% 2.1xB
With WRITE12 and streaming:
xorriso : UPDATE : Writing: 899296s 40.1% fifo 98% buf 100% 2.3xB
xorriso : UPDATE : Writing: 904544s 40.3% fifo 100% buf 100% 2.3xB
xorriso : UPDATE : Writing: 909280s 40.5% fifo 100% buf 97% 2.3xB
xorriso : UPDATE : Writing: 914528s 40.8% fifo 100% buf 100% 2.3xB
xorriso : UPDATE : Writing: 919264s 41.0% fifo 92% buf 100% 2.3xB
Have a nice day :)
