Conversation went like this:

you: none of my units return Format Type 1 [not even] for *DVD-RAM*
me: I get varying number of such descriptors per particular disc, e.g.
if I apply dvd+rw-format -ssa=none to *DVD-RAM* I get 8 of them. could
you test this in your unit too? i.e. with *DVD-RAM* :-)

Right. This is because you took away inner spare area and it became
visible as user space. BD inner area is also minimum and once it's
allocated increasing spare area is accounted to outer edge of the BD.
Meaning that as long as recording is short enough there is formal
possibility to extend spare area without zapping data. But once again, I
wanted to see if/that your unit offers Format Type 1 descriptors for
*DVD-RAM*... Cheers. A.
