The problem with this is that i would first have to
agree to their legaleese before i may or may not learn
how the stuff works.
"The LightScribe System Software" is probably a
set of functions which issues one or more non-standard
SCSI commands to the drive.
Crucial for open source support would be that these
commands and their specs get published.
Currently they seem to be hidden in a piece of
software licensed as "You may not modify the Software
or disable any licensing or control features of the
Software. [...] You may not disassemble or decompile
the Software unless HP's prior written consent
is obtained."
Well, so far for open source.
Assumed above crucial obstacles would be removed,
the task of Lightscribe would rather fall into the
scope of a printer project.
One would at least have to be able to read a
commonly used graphics file format, to map it
onto the print area and to transform it into the
data format of the Lightscribe commands. (I would
expect one has to re-paint the image as a spiral
scan.)
The task to transfer the commands and data to
the drive would indeed fall into our scope of
optical drive operation.
All in all, i would rather advise to buy an ink
printer which is capable of handling CDs.
It would print from office and paint programs,
in color, and usually quite fast.
White coated printable media are not much more
expensive than others.
