Improvement in the sense that now varirec has more features than in the past.

Yes, to be honest in my experience (Plextor PX-4824A and Plextor PX-716A) I've 
never see any improvement to use varirec in Plextor PX-4824A.
With varirec=0 I got only more C1 errors...
I've never try with Plextor PX-716A, for now...

Perhaps you are right...
Anyway I was just curious to see if was possible to extend cdrecord support 
for new Plextor features as varirec "improvements", in order to make 
experiments on OSes different from Win.
