I must be dense, since I don't understand your explanations, and I lack the
understanding of the algorithm. I _am_ trying to do some tests, but that's
an awfully vague explanation. I would really appreciate a suggestion of what
to actually test - my original one-liner that I pasted in the bug was intended
to be _the_ test...

If this is obvious for everybody else on the list except for me, please please
make me understand :-)

Agreed. I noticed the messages when compiling smake, just didn't get around to
do it yet.

It's your code, you make the rules :-)
I was expecting the version of the program to be the version of the tarball.
If you track the version number differently, that's ok too. It just struck me
as weird.
