Re: plextor px-708uf: cannot get disk type

I updated the Plextor PX-708UF firmware to 1.04 using PXUpdate in linux. I still get the same error, either in xcdroast or when I do dvdrecord -atip dev=0,0,0 in single user mode:

I don't think the growisofs success is random; I've burned several images that way with no problems. I just installed k3b, and I will try that out, too. But I actually do like xcdroast, and I would like to get it working. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tom

I have a Plextor PX-708UF (USB 2.0) on a Red Hat Linux 9 machine. When I try to burn an ISO from either xcdroast or the dvdrecord command line, I get the following:

The first Firmware from Plextor that is known to work halfway correctly
is 1.04.

Please first update the firmware, it is possible since more than a month!

If this _still_ fails after you upgraded to 1.04, then there are two
possible reasons:

-	A Linux Kernel bug - there are many of them.

-	An unfriendly second application tries to do simultaneous
	access.

A typical well known application is k3b from KDE.
In order to make sure this does not apply, boot into
single use mode. and try again.

The media is 4x DVD+R from Memorex. This is not an inherent problem with the drive or media, since I can burn the same iso with growisofs.

If something is caused by buggy software outside the application,
then in many cases it may also work just by luck.

Xcdroast otherwise works (I used it to make the iso file), and it correctly detects a CD-R (48x Memorex) when I tap ATIP-Info and it's in the drive. I don't have DVD-R to test, but I will do that.

As DVD+R does not implement a simulation mode, it is recommended to
use a DVD-R or DVD-RW for tests.

Perhaps this is a firmware issue--I see there is a version 1.04 available for this drive. (I gather the 708A is basically the same drive.) Can one upgrade Plextor firmware in Linux, or do I have to put this on a Windows machine to do it?

Support for upgrading the firmware for the plextor 708 was added 2.5 months
ago.

Jörg
