I'm no expert, but this sort of thing can happen when individual
applications are not configured to talk to the right sound device - you
can sometimes just get silence from one app, while others work.

In vlc, you can try checking under "Tools / Prefs / Audio / Output /
Output Module" and possibly adjusting the setting.

vlc's user specific config files live under /home/$USER/.config/vlc
