loss of sound in VLC

what controls the sound on vlc please? i.e.where is its config file?
I've grepped for it but i cant find a config file in /home/user/ my
vlc is now sound less and i dont know why, i've tried changing round
the speaker device but its still soundless some programs play, some
not play, amarok no,rhythmbox yes, clementine yes

i'm using gnome and the volume control is set to my sound card, and
i've checked the connections and theyre all good and tight. i've
changed the device and restarted vlc but its soundless. but movie
player works okay, except its too dark

i'v e removed vlc, autoremoved its orphans, and purged any config
files, and then reinstalled vlc again. Still no sound,it seems that
gstreamer is working but alsa isnt. I've googled with no success.

Can anyone help me please recover sound in vlc?

Thanks
Sharon.
