Well, gcc-3.2 is not recommended, but works for lots of people:

rei $ grep "gcc version" /var/log/dmesg
Linux version 2.4.21-rc2-ac2 (root@rei) (gcc version 3.2.3) #2 Mon May 19 19:37:10 PDT 2003

OTOT, gcc 3.3 is known to fail on the current stable kernel with the very
error reported in this thread (see recent lkml postings).

There's nothing wrong with unstable.
