No, I do it :
./configure
make
make install (as root)
> and that for checkinstall you're using

Yes, I found that out after I posted much to my embarassment.
I hadn't used checkinstall for quite a while and had never seen this problem
before , and was conviced:
a) I remembered how to use it, as the build proceeded nicely.
b) that a checkinstall upgrade was causing the problem !
Undoubtedly I had been using it properly before.
Actually, I just finished installing KDE from cvs using checkinstall.
What a great program.
I guess the next step would be to learn how to make a real deb, but at the
moment this is the next best thing without facing the seemingly daunting
docs.
