Several people have recommended uninstalling xdm; I tried that, but I
must have done something wrong or something else was set up that kept
starting X whenever I'd try to shut it down; finally I found the culprit
in /etc/inittab; near the end was a respawn of login.app. I commented
out that line and finally got the control I was wanting.
