LDAP stands for Light-weight Access Protocol. Protocol being the
keyword in this context. Historically, LDAP was intended as an
interface to (ISO) X.500 but some implementations went a step further
an implemented the backend as well (umich ldap and then openldap).
Currently OpenLDAP supports multiple backends with Berkeley DB2 being
the defacto. I think they are working on a SQL backend and they have
a gdm backend (which doesn't work as well as the db2).
