No distribution in for ultrasparc-linux builds applications default as
64bit. The overhead of the addressing space is not worth being able to
use 4gigs of memory from one application.

Yes, Debian does support 64bit build environment if you find a need for
it. You just install the gcc-3.2 package from unstable and set
CC="gcc-3.2 -m64".
