video problems on beige G3

Greets,

i've been tinkering round with Debian 2.2 for a few days but still can't
seem to solve my video problems. This is the kernel msgs i get if i boot
from BootX with the "No Video Driver option" checked.

    MacOS display is /pci/ATY,mach64_3DUPro
    Using unsupported 1024x768 ATY,mach64_3DUPro at 82800800, depth=16,
pitch=2048
Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 128x48
fb0: Open Firmware frame buffer device on /pci/ATY,mach64_3DUPro

Under X i can then get a ugly looking resoltion of some description. tinking
with the XF86config file doesn't seem to make any difference. the config
produced by anXious always gives the error "No valid modes found" despite me
changing the settings. However the default XF86Config file installed by the
server seems to work out of the box.

If i try to boot into linux with the video=atyfb option then i get the
follow kernel msgs

    MacOS display is /pci/ATY,mach64_3DUPro
atyfb: 3D RAGE PRO (PQFP, PCI) [0x4750 rev 0x7c] 2M SGRAM, 14.31818 MHz
XTAL, 230 MHz PLL, 100 Mhz MCLK
Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 80x30
fb0: ATY Mach64 frame buffer device on /pci/ATY,mach64_3DUPro

but it always boots in at 640x480 and when i try to start X i get the
following error

Fatal server error : fbdevScreenInit : unable to set screen params
(invalid Arguement)

and fbset gives the same style of error if i try to change the display
resoltion..

any ideas, comments, suggestions ... badly in need of advice :)

Mike
