What we are discussing primarily is an essay that is seemingly inseparable
from the documentation for the software. I say this as a user who could never
use emacs without access to the manual as an info document accessible from
within the application itself.

I'm not arguing for the public domain or the right to alter licenses.

I never said it should apply to *everything*. I'm all for the inclusion of
commentary essays which only permit verbatim copying, but which are not
*required* to be included in derived works. If you read what I said in my
previous note, I think I was clear that removing such essays capriciously
reflects negatively on the downstream distributor of the software and
documentation.
I think I'm being clear on what I think and why, so I'll shut up now and go
back to simply reading this discussion.
