- i venditori di hardware possono modificare il BIOS (probabilmente
attivando/disattivando delle funzionalità)
- alcuni BIOS di phoenix offrono la possibilità di autenticare in
qualche modo il sistema operativo
quindi è possibile/probabile creare qualcosa del genere

The exact same thing happened to me just last week on my Toshiba
Satellite A135. I plugged in my camera via the USB port. The laptop
froze, overheated, and now prompts me for a bios password. I've tried
all of the default passwords to no avail, and since I don't want to void
the warranty, I have to go get it fixed...which involves either driving
two hours (don't have a car at college, not gonna happen), or mailing it
to my parents at home so they can have it fixed 2 miles from our house.
Anyway, he's not making up this problem.
5) ho visto con i miei occhi un portatile (non ricordo la marca) su cui
era impossibile terminare l'installazione di ms-windows 2000 (il sistema
originario era ms-xp): semplicemente al primo reboot il sistema si
bloccava sul caricamento del sistema operativo ... e il CD provato su un
altro PC funzionava e comunque su quel portatile l'installazione la
completava quindi non c'erano problemi di lettura (la persona voleva
fare un downgrade del sistema per cercare stabilità e migliori prestazioni).
