If you are using apt-get instead of tasksel, aptitude or dselect, you
get what you ask for.
| installing the xserver packages did not pull xfonts-base onto the

| 'fixed'". that's also not an easy problem to get around for people who
| don't know the field that well...
Then install the x-window-system package.
